Founded in 2014 by Josie Cowley, The Harmonaires is an amateur, auditioned SATB chamber choir. We have between 35-40 regular singers and we meet weekly on Monday evenings.
Our choir is made up of a broad range of people of all ages, teachers, plasterers, solicitors, nurses, doctors – you name it!
Some of our members don’t read music, but as a whole, our musicianship and ensemble skill has grown significantly in recent years.
We use Dropbox for guide tracks to help members practice their pieces between rehearsals.
This is our choral rendition of Dear Theodosia from Hamilton, a new choir favourite.
Our year is made up of several public concerts in local venues which raise significant money for local charities, in particular, Isobel Hospice. A highlight of the year is our family-friendly Christmas Concert, Jingle All the Way, which is often a sell-out.
Each year, we will perform lunchtime recitals in different cathedrals in the region (Ely, Bury St Edmund’s, St Alban’s, Chelmsford), attend a choral competition in the country, and support our local community at regional events.
We also host The Bishop’s Stortford Choral Festival each October, which brings together many different adult choirs in the region to perform to each other and together as a mass choir, all whilst raising money for charity.
If you are interested in joining The Harmonaires, please get in touch.
We are very welcoming to new members and put a buddy system in place to support them.
We have a waiting list for Soprano and Alto places and will review membership requests for Tenor and Basses each term.
Any prospective singer would need to do a short audition and vocal check with Josie to ensure that you would blend well with the ensemble.
Josie, our Musical Director, is a highly trained Soprano who studied with teachers at Junior RNCM, the RAM and GSMD. She is an acclaimed Community Choir Director, having founded Herts and Soul Community Choir and The Harmonaires Choir, which collectively have raised over £100,000 for local and national charities in the past 15 years. Whilst the baton for Herts and Soul has been passed on, Josie relishes her time with The Harmonaires, finessing their sound and bringing new choral delights to the group.
She is a regular member of the Cambridge Chorale, a music teacher, and a qualified hypnotherapist specialising in anxiety management.
Josie believes in helping choristers improve their singing ability week after week and encouraging the very best sound and ensemble we can achieve.
The Harmonaires are regularly accompanied by Michael, one of the best and most in-demand accompanists in the region.
